Community Programs:

Delaware County EMS provides many services for the community it serves.  We offer programs to area schools, church and youth organizations, and special interest groups.  Some of the programs offered include:  The importance of dialing "9-1-1," Blood Pressure Screenings, Stroke Prevention, Fall Prevention for Seniors, Cardiac Health Awareness, Drinking and Driving Prevention, Car Seat Safety Checks, and Child Safety / Bike Helmet / Bike Safety Information.  Often times we work hand-in-hand with the Delaware General Health District in our Community Awareness Programs.

CPR and First Aid Training:

Basic life support SAVES LIVES!  In today's world, everyone should learn the basic skills to provide this life saving measure!  To take a CPR or First Aid course from the training staff at Delaware County EMS, please contact us!  We offer courses for you at regularly set intervals, or can easily arrange for a course at your organization or workplace.

Courses will be regularly held during odd numbered months (January, March, etc...) on the second Friday and third Saturday in the Delaware County Emergency Operations Center, 10 Court Street, Basement Level, Delaware, Ohio.  Classes will be held on Fridays from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm and will include both CPR and first aid.  On Saturdays, classes will start at 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, and then from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and will include time for those looking to complete the "check off" for their online training.

Professional Development:

Delaware County EMS dedicates itself to providing the best possible clinical education and training to all of its employees.  In-service training sessions are offered to allow employees the ability to maintain state and national certifications, a requirement of employment.  In addition, the education staff offers additional courses to help meet recertification requirements and provide additional knowledge in specialized areas of patient care.

Course offerings include:

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS or CPR)

  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

  • American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

  • American Heart Association Neonatal Resuscitation of Pediatrics (NRP)

  • 12 Lead ECG Interpretation

  • ACEP International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)

  • Advanced Airway Management

  • State of Ohio Paramedic Refresher Courses

Delaware County EMS is an American Heart Association Nationally Accredited Training Center, as well as a State of Ohio Department of Public Safety Accredited Provider of Emergency Medical Service Continuing Education (site #1002, expiring 4/2/2010).

Monthly In-Services are held on the last Tuesday of every month, topic and location to be announced.  If you would like to receive notification of these and other training announcements, please notify Assistant Chief Mike Schuiling by phone, at 740-833-2190, or by e-mail at mschuiling@delcoems.org .

Continuing Education is essential for all professionals involved in prehospital patient care.  We pride ourselves in offering tuition assistance to employees who wish to seek professional degrees, or general knowledge courses related to the EMS profession.

The Training Staff also assists the various surrounding colleges and EMS councils through our EMT-student internship programs.  All levels of EMT's are required to have documented ride time with experienced crews while in school.  Students from a number of Central Ohio paramedic schools frequently schedule their time with Delaware County EMS crews.

We frequently integrate the technology of our Human Patient Simulator, that was purchased in 2005 with Homeland Security funding, into our training programs.  Nicknamed "Ed," he allows us the opportunity to simulate countless patient scenarios in real-time, which teaches paramedics critical thinking skills in a life-like setting using a concept called "suspension of disbelief."  This allows the clinician to work as though the patient were real, taking the "patient's" vital signs instead of pretending and "treating" him by actually starting intravenous lines, pushing medications, defibrillating, and performing airway procedures as they would on an actual patient.
